Powerboat Level 2 - DRAFT Programme

The course will be run to the RYA Powerboat Level 2 Sylabus. Here is a rough outline of the weekends activities.

Saturday

0915 Introduction What is Level 2 Course. Where it fits in RYA Powerboat Scheme. What it is not! Bias of LVSC Course - what is minimised, what is added. RYA and suggested upping of standard to Level 3 for club rescue drivers. Alex
Rescue Duty at LVSC How do you know you are on duty - What to do if you can't make it. Club rules - recue boat to be in attendance otherwise no racing. Crew of two - one kitted for water. Problems when rescue cover is stretched - training vs racing. Problems with extra - last minute events. Alex/Sandy
Personal prep Club rules. Bouyancy aid/Lifejacket. Oilskins/wetsuit. Wetboots/wellies. Necktowel, hat, suntan cream. Sandy
CHANGE INTO SAILING GEAR
0945 Engines and boats Compare and contrast Seagull and Mariner. Mention shaft length - use tiny Johnston. Seagull for displacement hulls, Mariner for planing. Mention RYA definition of Safety Boat and Rescue Boat. Alex/Hunter
Engine Prep. mixing and filling fuel - pollution. Fuel lines - cans tied down. Engine mounts. Engine tilt. Hunter
Boat prep. Basic kit, RTE Kit, tow lines, pumps, bailers, alternate means of propulsion. Painter - length. Sandy
Launching & Recovery Consider slip - width, angle, condition, ownership, extension underwater. Sea conditions, wind conditions. Boat flot off not push. Deployment of crew. Trailer / trolley parking. Sandy
10:00 BASIC BOAT HANDLING IN CREWS Alex - Longliner, Sandy - Dory, Hunter - 'O'Boat.
Engine starting - gear in neutral. Fuel line primed. Choke Throttle override. KILL CORD. Use of starter cord. Check cooling water. return choke. Return throttle overide - into gear - drive away.
Engine stopping - gear in neutral - stop by switch - return switch to starting position.
Shallow drive / engine tilt
Loading - Balance / trim. Effect on stability and performance. Awareness of others - lookout, effect of wash at all speeds.
Slow speed manouvers. Coming alongside - approach; use of wind, escape route. Securing boat, cleats. Going ahore - shallow drive, engine off, crew out, beach boat - GENTLY !
1045 SHORE SESSION Boat kit. Warps, fenders, boat hooks. Engine spares, emergency equipment. Mention Coastal equipment. IRPCS - local byelaws, speed limits.
SHORE SESSION PICKING UP MOORINGS / ANCHORING
1100 Slow speed manouvers Coming alonside, standing off, picking up moorings, turning in own length (talk about paddle wheel effect)
